Green Party Leader to visit Fair Meals Direct

Green Party leader Natalie Bennett is set to visit our brand new service, Fair Meals Direct, which helps get healthy, heart food to Carlisle’s most vulnerable people.

She will be accompanied by Peter Cranie, Green party lead European election candidate for the North West region. They will drop by at the Fair Food Carlisle depot (directions below) at 12:30pm on Tuesday, 14 April. Anyone wishing to come along is welcome – we will even provide a locally-sourced lunch!

Fair Meals direct – which has taken over from Cumbria County Council ‘Meals on Wheels’ service – is a not-for-profit scheme set up to help ensure that specially prepared, nutritious meals are available to people in the city who are not able to make such food for themselves.
All meals offered by the new service are prepared using produce sourced from within a 30-mile radius of Carlisle – reducing food miles, helping the environment, helping to ensure a market for local food producers and providing a boost to the Cumbrian economy.

The meals are prepared by a professional chef based at the Water Street homeless centre in Carlisle, from where they are delivered to homes across the city by a team of volunteers.

Anyone wishing to sign up to Fair Meals Direct will be given a menu each week, from which they can simply select the meals they would like to order. The food is seasonal, menus are changed regularly, vegetarian options are available and specific dietary requirements can be catered for. Meals are available from Monday to Friday – however, people are not required to order food every day.

Already, around 25 people have signed up to the service, which delivered its first meals two weeks ago.

Hopefully, we will see you at the depot at 12:30pm!
